Song Rhythm Tracks (SRT) History
We divised the technology and then released an ‘arranger’ app on iOS for iPhones and iPads.
It allowed the user to arrange new backing tracks by specifying, or selecting, (i) the arrangement
and (ii) the underlying rhythm to use, from a catalogue of ~ 3,700 high-quality recordings of great session drummers.
The results was a high-quality rhymic (only) backing track, with quality metadata on its arrangement.
It had market adoption challenges likely due to it being unlike anything else on the market, while other high-functioning products already existed doing a similar function, but to an entirely different musical quality.
The benefit was great sounding backing tracks, that were very easily changed to another arrangement, or another rhythm.
The adoption friction was likely due to the unexpected delay before receiving the track (about 3 or 4 minutes), and, probably the unmet expectations due to comparisons to other product with others that followed a similar pattern but could never produce tracks of our realism and energy.
We also produced 4 x ‘sampler’ apps, that had the functionality of the main app, but, also included ~ 30 demo factory tracks each.
Our intention was to make the app easier to approach, by having existing examples already within the app.
What we learnt was users loved having demo tracks that they did not need to arrange themselves, and would play them, but, would not re-arrange them, or arrange any new ones.
The Pivot to NetTracks
As the server side technology to support the SRT arranger was getting too expensive to maintain, and, the market seemed more interested in pre-arranged tracks, we pivotted to building NetTracks, which is a streaming service for backing tracks.
Here we published a large catalogue of our pre-arranged SRT tracks.
NetTracks was extended to stream 3rd party backing tracks as well, and this became its new focus: a marketplace platform for streaming backing tracks from many vendors, while providing an unmatched audio player, tailored to backing tracks.
NetTracks has now become our focus, providing its technology whitelabelled to third parties and with a roadmap to include more and more vendors in its marketplace app, NetTracks.
NetTracks, an iPhone, iPad and Mac OS App, is released and will be available soon on Apple TV and Android devices.
We are looking for catalogue owners to choose NetTracks as the platform for streaming their backing tracks.
